Kathleen Edwards bandwagon? Yes, please.

I’ve been listening to Canadian singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards on Pandora for the last few months and seemed to tag nearly every song of hers. And now that Pandra has a 40 hours-per-month listening max (jerks), I decided to invest a little money in Kathleen–not Pandora.

It turns out I’m a little late to the Edwards bandwagon–as small as it may be. Her first disc, 2003’s Failer received impressive reviews. “…this album establishes Edwards as someone to watch…. Failer is a winner.” -RollingStone “She could be major.”-SPIN “Far from a failure, Failer is as gorgeous as it is flawless.” -All Music Guide.

Ms. Edward’s site sums up the subsequent 24 months…

And so, two years after my first album Failer was released, a year and half of amazing times followed. I got to play on Austin City Limits, open for Willie Nelson, John Prine, Aimee Mann, My Morning Jacket, John Mayer and Bryan Adams. I was invited to perform at Farm Aid ( I cried when Neil Young played “Old Man”), played the Grand Old Opry (Colin, my husband and bandmate wore his original Nudie Suit!), had a song in Cameron Crowe’s Elizabethtown, toured Australia, Europe, in a van, in a tour bus, by plane, by ferry, solo and with a band…… and then home.

Since then, she’s put out the superb Back to Me in 2005 and the stunning Asking For Flowers in 2008. I busted open my wallet and bought all three (plus a live ep available on iTunes). This is a bandwagon I’m really loving. Below is a live version of the heartbreaking “Copied Keys” from Back To Me. The sound isn’t great, but the performance is amazing. Enjoy.

Do I really need to spend more time online?

I already spend too much time online. Hours and hours some days. According to a NYT article, most of us spend 8 hours a day looking at some type of monitor–web, tv, phone, game. Um, I’ve got that beat.

I made the mistake of watching the first ever Streamy Awards tonight—mostly to see the cast of my favorite web shows; Dr Horrible’s Sing-along Blog and The Guild. I had no idea I would walk away with a list of new shows I now need to see. Damn you interweb!

I’ve started with You Suck at Photoshop. Oh my goodness! There’s something brilliant about being accosted by bitter host Donnie Hoyle, who’s friends are idiots, hates his viewers and who’s marriage makes him miserable. I started with episode 1, so no spoilers please.

Polarclock 3.0 is so cool, it’s hot.

I never download screen savers. Don’t know why, I just don’t. Until now.

I love the PolorClock (3.0) screen saver from Pixel Breaker. It reminds me of the Living Concept “calendar clock”, only it’s a clock, free and available in small, medium, large and super-bloated (dashboard widget, iPhone, OSX or Windows). And it’s fully customizable and seems to perform flawlessly.

Text alignment (outside, centre or inside of arc)

Flipping of text when it’s in the lower half of the arc

I think comedian Eddie Izzard is brilliant. And as a young boy I LOVED Legos–what boy doesn’t? So, I had to share these clips. I know they’ve been around a while but they make me laugh every time. Enjoy.

Holy Coconut Crab!

So this is real! While I can’t verify the authenticity of THIS photo, coconut crabs are indeed real. And according to my source they can get this big–although this one seems particularly ginormous.

“most references give a body length of up to 40 cm (16 in), a weight of up to 9 lb (4.1 kg), and a leg span of more than 3 ft (0.91 m), with males generally being larger than females.”

Why the name coconut crab? Because they CLIMB palm trees, use their claw to break into a coconut and eat the meat. Nice. That’s what I want to see on my tropical island vacaton, a giant crab overhead, hanging out in a palm tree. Please, please, never let them migrate to the states.

Why start a time-suck like a personal blog?

I guess I’m not really sure why I’m doing this. I love the web. I love discovering new sites and ideas and stuff. Truth be told, I’m always sending stuff to my friends and co-workers. And in some sense, I’m spamming them. This feels like a better outlet for all my interests and internet finds, so I’ll give it a whirl. Please post a comment or send me an e-mail.
